Karnak Temple Luxor, Egypt

Description

The Hypostyle Hall is considered to be one of the world's greatest architectural masterpieces. Construction began during Ramesses I's reign about 1305 BC and continued for over 20 years under Seti I and Ramesses II
The hall ceiling was 82 feet high and was supported by 12 papyrus columns. The columns are made of sandstone and set in two rows of six. Each row is flanked on either side by 7 rows of columns that are 42 feet (12.8m) high. Each row has 9 columns, however the inner rows have 7 columns.
This photo is of two rows of the shorter flanking columns on one side of the hall – note the one person sitting on the column base to give you a sense of the scale.

Thanks Tony! Even though the Egyptian monuments show the impacts of time they were amazing to see first hand. The scale is almost incomprehensible even in person and something that is very hard to convey in a picture. #7604073

I'm so glad you got an EP on this one so that I would get to see it. Yes I do suppose I could visit your gallery, but I haven't been visiting anyones gallery lately so don't feel bad! This is a fantastic capture. The person in the shot really is what makes this special. Shows the scale and grandure of such a place! :~) #7610078

Thank you so much Aimee. With all you are trying to balance right now I think it is amazing how much you are doing.

This was a real coup for me. One row of columns to the right there were so many people that you could hardly move and then I found this empty row and this lady came as sat down and I took the shot. You are absolutely correct without her in the shot this would not work half as well. #7610105
