fantastic...does this cloud formation take place often and where is it #1250752

This clouds formations are called lenticular clouds. They are not often seen in the area I saw them which is mostly desert. In fact I was contacted by a meteorologist from Nassa, confirming that there was no recolection of this fenomenon ever happening in this area before. The place is otjiwarongo in the state of namibia, Africa. I am including his breif explanation;
'These lenticular clouds were formed in a moist layer of stably
stratified air forced to ascend when the wind flowed over the
mountains. Rising air cooled and formed clouds when temperature fell
to the dew point. On the downwind side of the mountains, descending
air forced the clouds to dissipate. Stable stratification suppressed
vertical mixing of the air, so pronounced variations in moisture
content occurred in narrowly separated layers. The result was a pair
of cloues that looked like stacks of tortillas. Horizontal moisture
variations in the flow made the cloud shapes fluctuate so that they
appeared to be spinning.' for more information seach: lenticular clouds Thank You. Viveca.
