I like the ethereal, oil painted quality of your image, Ahab. It must have been very difficult to capture such an image, but it is very interesting and your post processing is unique. May I ask how you accomplished the effect? Thank you, JudyAnn #1118669

Hi JudyAnn,

Both capture and processing were driven by the challenges posed by the available light. Three different sources of light: late afternoon light filtered by stained glass windows, incadescant spot lights that you can see in the frame and candle light outside the frame. The raw image was soft at the edges with a good bit of colour noise, despite the FX sensor. Post processing: (1) accentuate value separation and midtone density; (2) softening blurrs to blend in the noise in the white surfaces, give the lights a glow and accentuate the incense smoke from the priests's swinging thurbile; (3) sharpen the edges; (4) punch up the warm light in the lights, the cross and as reflected on the tile floor; (5) selectively desaturate to black and white, leaving in the warmish reds in the skin, the chocolatty column in the back, and the orangy yellows in the cross and the spot lights. Paint in and out to isolate the effects as needed.

If you need more specific information, send me a message.

Love your gallery by the way. #7452289
