Description

The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Norway housed artifacts from the Viking Age, 800-1100 A.D., which includes the ocean going, speedy long boat/ship. Without this crucial advance in ship technology, the Vikings could have never become a dominant force in medieval warfare, politics, and trade.

During the end of the 19th and beginning of 20th century, valuable discoveries were uncovered from the Viking Age and a specific building was proposed by Swedish archaeology professor Gabriel Gustafson in 1913. The Gokstad and Oseberg ships had already been sheltered temporarily at the University of Oslo. The hall for the Oseberg ship was built with funding from Norwegian Parliament, and this ship was moved in 1926. World War II interrupted the progress, but the museum was finished and all ships were moved to the facility.
