Tri-Colored Heron

Uploaded: July 10, 2008

Description

As wading birds go, this is a smallish one called a Tricolored Heron. They have a curious mating/territory ritual they go through in the spring. Looking skyward, the male will thrust his head into the air (pictured here), snapping his beak at each full extension of his neck. After the third time, he draws in head back and emits three low, muffled, grunting sounds. It is actually rather comical to watch but the girl herons seem to like it . . . a lot.
