The Chrysler Building (built by auto maker Walter Chrysler in 1930), with its spectacular, stainless steel, stepped-dome top surmounted by its spear-like spire, is easily the world's most identifiable skyscraper.
For a few months, it was the world's tallest until it was surpassed by the Empire State Building.
