The Porthole

A composite. I included the original image for comparison in the discussion comments of this image. I added the view through the porthole from another one of my images and the reflection. I also toned the image gold using Autofx Tint/Tone/Color software.

Heather, this is outstanding! While I can mentally grasp how you achieved the insertion of the lighthouse, I'm stumped as to how you you got the "mirror" reflection in the center of the image, despite a complex refraction. Any hints? ;-)Christian #971614

Thank you Christian. After I got the pier scene into the porthole, I just masked the reflection portion on the glass. Since it was a lighter color than the rest of the glass it was a pretty easy mask to make. I also made sure I feathered the edges of my mask.I then flipped the mask horizontally, and moved it over to the pier scene I had added making sure I only moved horizontally...and not vertically. I then copied/created an object from the part of the pier image that I moved the mask to. I then flipped the new reflection object horizontally again...and moved it back to the original postion in the window!! When I merged the object...I merged it at only 50 percent opacity in normal merge mode!!
The hardest part about making this image was getting the edge of the porthole opening smooth. As you can see some of the bottom edge was blown out in the original, so I had to recreate that. I got down to the pixel level basically with the clone tool and a smoothing brush to get that edge smooth and even!! #971811
