WoWzer Nick. Awesome star trail capture.
Ken taught me how to find the North Star and how to do the star trails (he didn't tell how to "focus" in the dark. LOL) But what is this "painting with light"? Do you put a spot light on the capture for the last few seconds? How strong of light does it need to be? I'm very interested in this technique. Please teach me oh great one. #7696745

Thanks everyone for the very generous comments....Ann,finding the North star is a good start...I use a big spotlight to try and get a vertical tree for framing as it's so dark you can't see the horizon...For the "painting" I use a very small single leadlight ( a small flashlight would be fine) which emits a softish light..as it was almost impossible to have the subject perfectly stationary for 15 minutes...so he came in at the very end and was painted for that last 99 seconds....hope that helps #7700439

Inspirational to me. I aspire to get some gorgeous star trails like this someday. I did get some mediocre ones in Big Bear. Maybe I'll post some for you this month. I need to bring foreground into the picture. Someday I dream of this capture as the cowboy is dreaming of.......... ABSO-@&#%-ING-LUTELY OUT-BLOODY-STANDING shot! Surely one of the BEST I have seen on this sit in a very very long time. Certainly deserved of the finalist if not the GOLD!
Very well though out and creatively put together. Hard to believe the stars "rotate" so much in just 15 minutes! Our earth must REALLY be spinning!
Superior Composition, perfect PoV, and just an all around great idea for a shot that could not have been done better!
May I ask what ISO you were set at for the star trails?? 100!?!??, 200??, tremendous job in "painting" your subject with light, you could not have timed that better either
