Flora-Florida #4 . . . Lantana camara

Uploaded: April 25, 2008

Description

You are looking at "the most studied weed in the world". I find it odd this was in a state park. I have written to the state to ask them why they would plant an invasive species in a state park. I could be wrong; this does not look like Lantana depressa but like the toxic Lantana camara. You flower experts let me know.

I thought the colors looked really nice contasting with the greens. Not bad for a "weed".

Thank you for visiting my gallery.

My series on “Flora-Florida” is being done for the pure joy of being out in nature and showing photos of the flora of the state of Florida. The photos in this series are not meant to compete with indoor shots and digitally altered shots, even if I enter them into the contest. Outside, the wind blows. Detail may not be as perfect as a rose petal shot indoors, nor will the lighting. The lens may not even be a macro, if I was out to shoot animals that day with my telephoto and stumbled upon some flora to shoot. If I am able to get some “great shots”, that is a bonus. The real purpose is to get me into the wild, where I enjoy shooting both flora and fauna, and showing others some flora from the state of Florida. I find that the simple natural beauty in the real natural world personally rewards me.

”Lantana camara is notoriously poisonous and deaths have been reported throughout its range, including Florida. The green, unripe fruits can be fatal to humans if eaten (but ripe fruits are harmless), and the leaves are exceptionally toxic to grazing cattle. Lantana camara has the dubious distinction of being the most studied weed in the world.”
