Whaling Station Ruins Description: A small part of the complex machinery needed to process whale oil rusts in the harbor at the whaling station in Grytviken on South Georgia Island. The station was built in 1904 by Norwegian-born British citizen, Captain Carl Larsen with Argentinian financing. It reached its peak in the 1920s and finally closed in 1966. The site is being restored as a historic reminder of whaling days. Our cruise ship lies in the background.
