This is DEFINITELY scary, and would make a great Halloween poster. I don't know how you did it, but the effect is fantastic. Outstanding work, Casey!

Dave Tilley November 16, 2004

I may be in the minority here, but I think your image, while demonstrating talent to be sure, is an illustration, and should not qualify to be recognized as "photography."

In general, there seems to be a disconnect on this month's choices for Finalists. I applaud your effort here. Just wish it was a real photograph.

#916443

Peggy Wolff November 16, 2004

Congrats Casey, this is perfect for October and it a well deserved finalist! Don't you let anyone try to burst your bubble! #916626

Casey A. Hanson November 16, 2004

Thanks Donna, Karen, Dave, and Peggy.
Dave~ on your comment concerning my finalist, I couldn't agree more. I am pleased that they picked it in the category of digital darkroom, but at the same time, I feel I had a few nice submits this month that were exceptional "Photographs". As were many wonderful images from all the other members that were overlooked. But when you're dealing with thousands of images every month, that happens. All that being said, it is just for fun, and free. I don't take it to heart when I am not chosen each time. I don't believe anyone should.I think it helps us all "improve our game". My congrats to all the finalists, good luck in the next round. Have a great day! #917118

Patricia A. Kuniega November 16, 2004

Quite frankly I don't see the difference between taking a photo of a door cling, a basket of fruit or a mountainside. As photographers we don't create the subjects that we shoot. What we do is capture the subject to the best of our ability, and if we choose to, enhance it. Seems to me that Casey has done a superb job of enhancing her photograph and deserves the recognition she has received! Congratulations Casey! #918394

Casey A. Hanson November 16, 2004

Thank you Patricia! I do enjoy taking pictures in the "truest" form, but I also love Photoshop for the endless ways you can create your own one-of-a-kind piece of art. I appreciate your opinion greatly, and thanks for the wonderful sentiments! Congratulations to you again on all your fine finalists , they are well deserved.:0) #918450

Dave Tilley November 16, 2004

I agree, to a point. As photographers, our goal is to capture the subject as it exists. And to enhance it? Yes. But there is a fine line between enhancing, and manufacturing.

If I take a photograph of a sunset, and then draw-in mountains, a stream and some wildlife, then I no longer am being judged on my photographic skill.

Furthermore, if I'm entering a "photography" contest, and the overwhelming composition of my submission is illustrated, then how can I claim to be playing on a level field with other contestants?

No. I think this site is designed to showcase work of photography, not illustration. This is not a personal attack on Casey. The talent is quite clear.

The bottom line is that enjoying Casey's art is not the issue. The issue is the integrity of the phographic process, and the virture of photographic exhibitionism. #918460

Casey A. Hanson November 16, 2004

Hi Dave~
I understand your point, but as you may know, or not, there is the category of "Digital Darkroom" that is specifically for this type of manipulation with a photograph. We are in a digital age, and Photoshop is there for the purpose of enhancing and manipulating an already present subject. This site happens to offer a class on this very thing. I'm sorry if this offends you, but hey, I had alot of fun making it. :0) #918500

Stanley J. Contrades November 16, 2004

Your 'closet wizardry' is impeccable, Casey, and aren't you glad you don't live in the times of the witch hunts that went on quite some time ago :-)!! Evidently the "witches" and "warlocks" in judgement felt a liking for this image! Just keep on shooting and creating and don't let anyone steal your dreams, Casey!! CONGRATULATIONS!!
Aloha,
Stan #918582

Casey A. Hanson November 16, 2004

Thanks Stan! Bless your heart. I appreciate that! :0) #918842

Wendy M. Amdahl level-deluxe November 16, 2004

Casey, your image is creative and unique and fun and yet it still originated from a PHOTO! It was entered into this contest in the DIGITAL DARKROOM category. And as such, it received the recognition that it deserved from your peers and the judges. Congrats again on your fantastically spooky PHOTO!

And Dave, although you certainly have the right to voice your opinion...you should do so in the appropriate forum. And Casey's congratulatory discussion thread is not it! Especially, since you yourself admitted that it was not even about CASEY'S art, but rather your distaste for digitized photography as a whole. Your argument would be better made directly to BP or on the Q&A boards. Additionally, there is MUCH great information on this very topic going on in my Haunted Mansion discussion thread right now and you would be well served to review it.

Hey Casey, what an interesting thread this turned out to be :)

Just a well deserved congrats from me!! #919101

Casey A. Hanson November 16, 2004

Thanks Wendy! Not only for you wonderful compliment, as it means a great deal to me, but for the insight that you give.
I, for one, am always open to new challenges and knowledge where photography is concerned. Whether that be Photoshop, or mastering a difficult subject in the field, RAW. Mastering ALL the tools is part of my success as a aspiring photographer.

Dave~ my photogragh was submitted in pure fun and not intended to put a bad taste in anyone's mouth, but I will not apologize for a piece of work that I spent a reasonable amount of time on.
My thoughts on your opinion are simply...
Opening one's eyes can open many doors.
Thanks again, Wendy! :0) #919116
