Paint-by-numbers Redhead
Uploaded: February 09, 2008
Abstract treatment on a photo of a redhead duck, which reminded me of the old paint-by-numbers pictures. I can't remember exactly how I arrived at this image, but one of the layers I used was a "hot wax coating" on a copy of the original, and I also applied either a contours effect or posterization effect on another layer. The final step was to erase some areas on the top layer.

original colors & effects! #850988Cary Rogers February 09, 2008
Hi, Tiia! Thanks for dropping by and commenting! When I was very young, I used to get a lot of "paint-by-numbers" sets gifts; I don't know if they still even sell them anymore. Before I'd finish the painting, I'd always run out of one the colors and still have plenty of another color left over. ;-) #5470765Eivor Kuchta February 09, 2008
I agree Cary, this looks like a "paint-by-number" picture. They still sell them. My kids loose interest before they are finished with them, though.Michael Khoury February 10, 2008

I've been looking at pictures on BP for days and weeks now, (I'm a new member), and have never seen one like this yet. It's very striking and only fully appreciated when you zoom in. This would make a terrific blow up for your wall at home, too! I'm impressed! Must have taken you a WHILE to arrive at this masterpiece!Cary Rogers February 12, 2008
Thank you for your great comments, Laura! The redhead is one of my favorite ducks to photograph. I liked the original photo, but the water was a grayish-green and I wanted to do something different with the whole image. It took me a few hours, off-and-on, to process the photo and arrive at this end result. Thanks again, and welcome to the BP community! #5484716Susan Heath February 12, 2008
