Hens & Chicks

Description

Great grandma called them Hens & Chicks, I have never known them by any other name. 25 years ago I took a few from her garden & planted them in mine. These are their offspring. When I look at them I remember her.

This is lovely, Joseph, love the details you captured here and if I am not mistaken you might have a winner here.

Patricia, I can take no credit for the survival of this ground cover [proper name unknown]. See how Laurie discribed it above, "little resilient garden beauties"? I do absolutely nothing to tend them. Ice & snow, freeze and thaw have no adverse effect at all. Lots of folks do what my great grandma did, put them in rock gardens.
I have never photographed them before yesterday when I saw them in a "different light". Now I am inspired. You will see them again.
Thanks for your response, Patricia. #5114590

Well, I love this one too, Joe. I remember Hens and Chickens from MY grandmother's garden, where she could always be seen bending at the waist, pulling out the weeds. It was a magnificent garden. I don't have an of her offspring, but when I saw your incredible macro, I immediately thought of her!

Thankx, Rhonda. Glad you like it. I guess lots of grandmas had these in their gardens. I have a couple of other things in my garden that have moved along with us.

It seems these plants have brought out sweet nostalgia in a lot of people, Joseph ~ whether for hens and chicks (beautifully detailed macro, by the way), or for other garden inhabitants that return yearly as a reminder of someone you love.
Mine's the calla lily. My mother had them planted along one side of our house. I brought home one from our wedding 10 years ago, and am enjoying its latest rebirth this month (and thinking of Mom as well).
Thanks for the memories! #5143637

I had forgotten that many of us are reminded of loved ones by plants and flowers we associate with them for one reason or another. Thanks for reminding me, Mary.
