Fruit in WIndow_ Asym Balance and negative space

Uploaded: October 22, 2007

Description

Raw capture.ISO 800 1/90s at f8 (-1 exp) 33 mm (17-85 lens) Hand held. This is a more complex composition. Shadows and negative space direct the eye to the secondary point of interest - the three oranges. The curve of the oranges in a semi-circle and the lines of the bananas lead the eye back to the center of the composition. The original actually has more "negative space" to the left but I thought it was unnecessary and that this crop looked better. The negative space of the window and table top are subtly divided by similar horizontal and vertical lines. Because the bowl, candleholders and window are glass the viewer visually "sees through" and mentally continues the picture beyond the top left so the added negative space was overkill. I know the candles appear "crooked" by it is really the wide angle lens distorting the verticals and I chose to leave the distortion so the window mullians echo the curve of the table. I think it adds a surreal quality.

Exif: Exposure Time: 1/90, Flash: 16, ISO: 800, Camera Model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT
