This is nothing short of magnificent. It looks like you might have just bleached and toned portions of the print. Is this correct or did you do the whole thing? Infrared is a tough medium and I applaud your work - keep it up and none of us will have a chance in this competition. #10195

One more thing, what is custom white balance???? Thanks #16513

Damian P. Gadal October 04, 2002

Outstanding all the way around. #16514

Mitch Schlesinger October 04, 2002

Thank you both. Debbi, I should have been more specific; I use a digital camera with an infrared filter. Some digicams pick up "false colors" when shooting IR, and the custom white balance lets me adjust color temperature, just as if I were using a camera setting for tungsten, fluorescent, etc. The difference is it's done in the post-processing stage (with software) rather than in-camera. (I can do that too, but it's really not necessary.) So, no bleach required. :-) #16518

no, here I am, start with J. this is a very eye catching picture, a terrific IR shot with great shaprness & composition, excellent work Mitch. regards, Jimmy. #16530

Thanks, Jimmy!
Funny thing is that this shot was taken on a very cloudy afternoon, and the "real" color shots were lifeless. I put the IR filter on my lens as an experiment, as I had previously only shot IR on bright days. Just then the sun decided to peek from behind the clouds, backlighting the tree and highlighting the background foliage. A "lucky" shot, I'd say.
Cheers, #16538

yes Mitch, that's why people say "no lighting, no photography". the beautiful layers of the trees in the background & the sparking water......, all made by magic light. also the color of the picture just fabulous. #16541

I am using a hoya r72 IR filter with a Canon d60 and I am having issue. all the photos are coming out very, very dark. any ideas? #29395

Mitch Schlesinger May 26, 2019

Craig,
Yes, an idea, but I'll bet it's not what you want to hear. My understanding is that the D30/D60 CMOS has an IR cut filter built in. From what I have read your camera is not sensitive to the IR spectrum. You could try a very long exposure but I don't think you'll have much luck; I saw someone suggest a 30sec exposure at f2.8 on the D30. In my opinion that renders the camera useless for IR, as the slightest movement in the foliage you are shooting will cause significant blur and you will not have much depth of field. You can fake it in Photoshop or buy a cheap camera (used G1) that is IR-sensitive. Best of luck. #29400
