Doug,Many thanks for your comments and critique, I greatly appreciate both -
The answer to your main question is several-fold. Firstly, I was experimenting with some new Tiffen filters that had just been kindly bought for me a few days earlier as a part of a birthday present - it would have been ungracious not to have used them, especially as my family, who bought them, ...were with me, celebrating my father's 60th birthday, which falls 6 days after mine!
Secondly, this was the image I immediately conjured in my mind upon stumbling across this quiet street - a kind of dreamy solitude and neglected ambience.
Thirdly, I'm not a great fan of post-photographic manipulation - using filters is sacrilege enough imho - although I am coming around more to PS, I still don't use it for anything other damage repair and tinting B&W images - if it ain't right initially, it ain't right at all, ...of course I'm more than happy to be persuaded otherwise!:)
I wonder what Cartier-Bresson and Adams think/would have thought about all this digital spookery?! :))
Lastly, I simply wasn't clever enough at the time to think of other interpratations later - ...but I concur with you and shall probably maximise the 'decent optics' a little more in future! :)

I was afraid I'd come on too strong-I'm told I have a strange sense of humor. I got started in B&W, and my mentor then passed on his fetishes for shadow detail and image quality. I absolutely love this kind of shot. I'm attaching one of my own. I love lines and curves in a photo esp. when it's leading your eye to somewhere you can not see, but can only imagine what might be around the corner.
Aside from the photograph, your comments about your family are so kind and sweet. They are lucky indeed to have a son like you.
Would that also mean your birthday is coming up in December?
