Great photo, Karen! It shows the power of moving in close and removing distractions.

See the catch lights in her eyes? They add life to the subject. Any portrait looks far better with them. Often just a slight turn of the head toward something bright can bring them out, in this case, the sky.

The slightly tilted head also adds energy and keeps this from being a mug shot, as does your dynamic head-to-the-edge, yet balanced cropping.

Best of all, it is a good example showing how shade can be more complimentary than shadows by smoothing over skin blemishes and wrinkles.

Good choice of a simple background too, neutral in color to blend well and not so bright that it would distract our attention. Great job. #733089
