Photo #1 (Background Layer): Selected around the focal fish using Magnetic Lasso tool, feathered selection 2 pixels, and painted (Paint Bucket) over background using a blue color selected from the darker area of the photo. Used Lighting Effects: Spotlight to vary the color in the background. Also used a mild Lighting Effects: Spotlight on the fish.

Photo #2: Created a Duplicate Layer of the photo (Layer #2). In this layer, I used "Auto Color" to remove the blue tint from the fish and bring out the other colors (especially greens). Photo #2 is Layer #2 alone with default options.

Photo #3: Changed the Layer Style: Blending Options on Layer #2 to enhance the green and teal colors in the original. Settings for Layer #2: Blend Mode = Normal, Opacity = 50%, Fill Opacity = 100%, Channels = Green and Blue only. Photo #3 is the background (Photo #1) plus Layer #2 with these settings.

Photo #4: Made a second copy of Layer #2 (= Layer #3). For this layer, I set the Blending Options as follows: Blend Mode = Multiply, Opacity = 90%, All channels, Fill Opacity = 100%. Photo #4 is the background plus Layer #3 (without Layer #2).

For the final photo, these layers were all merged and Unsharp Mask applied.

Yep, finally finished everything and got all the signatures I needed. I have to wait for the school and the mail to make sure everything went through all right, but so far all indications are positive... Didn't quite get through all the boxes in my parents' garage, though...

Also, I like to try to remember what worked for future photos. Though, I definitely start out with the dab here, play with options there, method... I use the history tabs a lot in Photoshop to see what I've done and what effect it had. Also, I have Photoshop set to remember what I did last, rather than always reverting to the default.
