In terms of texture, I think this is one of your most appealing images, Norm. What could have been an ordinary shot has been transformed into a nostalgic work of art. Nicely done.

Hey Steve, thanks "My Man"

Three different images were color edited, then converted using Dry Brush.

Next they were layered and blended with vivid light at 100% opacity. To add some watercolor like splotchyness I used the flaming pear filter, wreakage set to random and liked the result from the first pass.

Norm, you imagry is outstanding..this image and the other great images in your gallery. Your style of expression is unique and wonderful. I am a fan of your work!! #4344744

Interesting texture in here, and I like the color manipulation. One note about your composition is that on the left, it feels like the building's a bit cut off (like there wasn't enough room to show it all), yet there is enough room to show the random telephone poles poking into frame on the right. At the very least, I'd clone out the telephone pole arms and perhaps also the blue-ish area in the bottom right, below your copyright. hth! #4345155

Hi Melissa, thanks so much!

I think we have a mutual admiration thing going on! (big smile)

Hello Josh!

Thank you for taking time to view my image and offer a critique.

You are absolutely right about the left side being cut off. I grabbed 3 shots of the building at a run (literaly) as I had a truck load of people going to a picnic.

The idea at the time was to have the street run off from the building in the distance to the right. However, I was not far enough off the corner, so I ended up shooting more directly at the center of the building than down the street. (if any of this makes sense)

I'm also finding the wide angle lens on my old prosumer Fuji ain't as wide as I sometimes think and I often get more tube vignetting than image when I shoot all the way out.(smile)

The dark blotch of blue in the lower right is from the plant and leaves layer that was part of the original composite of Mall Paving and Plants. The building was added later just to see the FX and the result is what you see.

I will take your advice and see how the image takes to the changes.

Thanks again!

I noted the phone poles when I first saw the image and rather liked them being there, Norm. They added a hint to the feeling that the world was passing this place by. I do agree with Josh about the bluish area.

Hey Steve, you got the idea from the start.

As I told Josh, I wanted to show federal Highway running off to the south but,(1) I was shooting off angle (2) my wide angle view in the viewfinder is not what my lens is seeing.

The blueish area is a dark leaf from one of the layers.

BTW, I added a nice border on the print size file that I send up to my selling site that gives it an even more old nostalgic feel thanks to your comment.

Thanks again for coming back on this one.

Well, for grabbing a shot at a run, I think you found something really neat! I see now what you and Steve are referring to with the poles; my personal opinion is that if you'd shown more of the poles, and not just the top arms, then this would've worked better for me. They just struck me as a little weird because of how they're cropped. But hey, that is a minor nitpick! :) #4349072

Hey Josh, being at the head of the class in this discipline, you get to nitpick all you want! (big smile)

That and the fact that you ride. I raced road and coached USCF here in the east during the late 80's and thru out the 90's.

Hello Norm, I just saw this in EFPs. Great job!! #4359677

Dave Winchell June 03, 2007

Norman, I like the composition as you shot it. The poles are what I used to determine that I wasn't looking at a photo of a mosaic. Very thoughful image Norm.

Norman P. Banks June 04, 2007

Hi Elizabeth and Dave, thank you for your thoughtful comments!

Elizabeth, I didnt even know what EFP's was or that we had such a feature on BP (Smile) but then I've only been a member since 2000 (Big laugh)

Dave, thanks so much for adding a new point of view regarding this image. I never thought about it that way until your comment. I'm starting to get the urge for a new camera. My old fuji is great, but the lens extensions leave a lot to be desired.

Hi Norm;
I've been 'out of pocket' for a while...kinda took a break to recharge my batteries.

Congrats on being a finalist with this image. You know I've got to check your gallery periodically to see what else you've creatively cooked up.

Your creativity continues to inspire!!

Regards,

Norman P. Banks July 16, 2007

Hey Mike, good to hear from ya! Thanks for visiting the gallery and commenting.

I've been off site for awhile myself. It's outdoor season for our little retail business, plus I've kinda run dry creatively for awhile.

Have you ever been up along A1A around the Palm Beach area? that's how I ran across this building.

Steven E. Ray July 30, 2007

Congratulations for the finalist of this fine creation. Highly unusual effect combination which is reflective of a painting. Great Job! #4578845

Norman P. Banks July 30, 2007

Hey Steven, thanks!

I came across this building while driving to a picnic while in Florida.

The original was nice on its own, but I wanted to add a little more nostalgia, so I played around some.
