Stay Outta my Territory...!

Uploaded: April 22, 2007

Description

ISO 800, f/8, 1/2000 sec, Canon 600mm lens + 1.4X extender, tripod. Cropped and minor adjustments in PSCS2. This Rufous Hummingbird is "on territory" - staking his claim to a breeding and feeding territory. Hummers apparently have no knowledge of their relative size as they will aggressively defend their breeding territories - with attitude. The bright colors, particularly of the neck feathers (or gorget as it is known), warn other males to stay away. And, along with display flights, attract lady hummers.
