I love this shot - I just got a D200 and am going to WA/OR next month - wondering what kind of settings did you use and what lens size. I have one of the 18-200mm VR lenses - so, I'm assuming I'd have it on 18mm with ISO at 100 - F/16?? Shutter?? I don't see mountains around me and don't have anything like it to practice on!
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Thank you all very much for comments!

Barbara,

What you see is a high dynamic range
merge of two versions of the same image -
1/80 sec at F/8 and 1/60 sec at F/7.1.
(ISO 160).
The first one got most of the image ok but some spots were too dark. The next one is too light but the dark spots are good. The merge is done with masks in PS. The lens is 10-20 mm (Sigma) at 19 mm with circular polarizer. I used auto white balance and it got most of the image ok but some parts were too white, so I shifted white balance in Nikon Capture to warmer color and merged again in PS using mask.

In general, I shot in A (aperture priority setting), making sure parts
of the image I need sharp are sharp
and use smallest possible exposure
and ISO to keep it sharp (+ some safety limit) unless
I got really plenty of light (it
almost never is for me :) ).
So I adjust in sequence: aperture,
exposure (+ - from auto in A setting),
then ISO from 100 and up.
This works for me, you may find difference scheme
working better for you. The great thing about D200 is that it allows to check
lifesize image for sharpness.
The rules I use for exposure won't apply for you since you got vibration reduction which I do not.

OR/WA are absolutely great. If you plan to hike in North Cascades I can recommend a book.

Best regards,
