On first glance, one is stuck by the obvious use of lines in the image: the seam lines of the pants and shirt as well as subtler lines in shirt's fabric, the lines created by the book, and the fingers. The complementary colors are very attractive, and the various textures add interest. There is a noticeable contrast between the softness of the shirt and the strength of the grasp on the book, suggesting a determination of the subject's ability to hold on to his beliefs, in spite of an outward soft demeanor. This is a very strong image indeed.

As improvement, I would suggest cropping out the far left side of the frame, removing the belt loop. That side of the shirt and the belt loop do not add anything to the image, and when you do that crop, the hand and book become stronger elements. You can also darken the wall behind/under the hand to help emphasize it. -- jj
