American Kestrel - Female

Uploaded: January 28, 2007

Description

ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/1250 sec, Canon 500mm IS lens + 1.4X extender, handheld. The American Kestrel is commonly known as the sparrow hawk, but is biologically a falcon. Usually I see these birds sitting on telephone lines, making a tough photographic situation. This one flew in a field after something then landed in the perfect spot along the road and cooperated while I shot images. Cropped, plus slight exposure and hue adjustments plus sharpening in PSCS2.

Great shot - for an elusive prey. Almost impossible to hand hold at that focal length! #595687

Thanks so much, Tim, Richard and Jo! And yes, Tim, I was fortunate with the handholding (although Canon's IS system gets a lot of the credit). I shot probably 35 images of this bird and only about a third of them were usably sharp. The situation was so good I decided to go for it rather than take the time to set up my tripod, and this time it worked out! John #3884427
