Gutter Fly

Description

The colours of this butterfly blend with the gutter it is pearched on. To highlight the beautiful sunburst of colour in the wings, I found a viewpoint with a neutral background. I had to move quickly and steadily so as not to scare the creature away.

I am happy to receive comments from other photographers on how this photograph could have been improved as I am an amature. In fact, any tips on taking close-ups of wildlife would be appreciated. #6488

I'm no pro Martin, but when I take photos of animals or wildlife, I am trying to get the photo where the creature is in "nature" not on a building, telephone wires, and in this case a gutter. But the butterfly was on the gutter, so that's what you had to work with. The background is a "mess" lot of colors and depth. I would crop as tight around the butterfly as possible. The butterfly itself is nice and sharp, so you shouldn't have any problem with cropping most of the background away, and still have a good shot.
