No, no special technique. That's just the way his fur looked. And according to a class I took in stock photography, yes - a property release is a good idea. In fact, I had a greeting card company contact me about licensing one of my cat images for a card, and they wanted a signed release (luckily it was MY cat) before they'd use it. #3665205
