Hi Dolores,
Great pic, all the elements just went together well with this I think.

Were you able to take shots from different angles? I'd be interested in seeing them. #8486

Dolores Neilson June 06, 2002

Greetings Romen!! And thank you so much!! This particular image posed a challenge compositionally due to the stairs. I took many shots....some with the horizontal water line lower in the frame...but it lowered the girl too low and gave the image a totally different perspective that wasn't appealing. By placing the girl in the abstract vertical line as suggested by rule of thirds, I was cropping part of the sunset at right (which has all the color) and capturing too much of the stairs. Moving more to the right...it enabled me to include the entire horizon with color but the girl was too far left, creating imbalance. I do have another shot where the girl is even higher (which I liked) with more water in the foreground but because my camera was low and tilting upward, I lost the reflection which really took away from the shot. Thanks so much for your interest ...I am always open to how an image can be improved upon. Thanks Romen!! And have a relaxed evening. #8488

Dolores Neilson June 06, 2002

Romen...I also meant to say that I also tried having the girl step down but I lost her silhouette in the darker background and of course up higher pulled her out of the frame. #8489

This is beautiful Delores. I really love the girl being in the photo and especially the steps. It just makes it for me. Where was this taken? #8490

Dolores Neilson June 09, 2002

Thank you very much, Donna. We went to Stony Creek on the Connecticut shore last weekend and happened to be there during the sunset. I noticed the concrete stairs at the end of the seawall and played around with different angles and such. Across the street is one of my favorite eateries....you sit outside and watch the boat activity and it is amazingly relaxing. Come up and join me sometime! Thank you for your post on my image, Donna. #8492

June Marie Sobrito June 09, 2002

'Awsome in fact!...I love the composition here...The colors and shades of color are beautiful and the contrast and sharpness are perfect. That's the "Delores trademark"..... The young ladies sexy figure and stance in combination with the mystery of the stairs leading downward add to the magic of this wonderful photo . good luck #8504

Piper Lehman July 09, 2002

Well, gee whiz, Dolores! It only took me 20 minutes to scroll through all the comments here! LOL

This is so nice. You have captured so many interesting details -- the stairs and the reflection of the stairs make such a nice "line" for the eyes to follow around the image. The colors are fabulous, and the silhouette is perfect. (How DID you get her to stand so still?) I do wish I could see more of the boat's outline in the background, but the rest of the shot is so good, the boat doesn't really matter all that much.

Congrats! Great job. #9611

Dolores Neilson July 09, 2002

Aw Piper..thanks so very much!! Didn't have too much difficulty with getting her to stand still...it was just where to put her for pleasing composition!! She stood on every single one of those stairs! As for the boat (I'm surprised you can see it..good eye!)....I almost cloned it out...didn't really want it there but decided to leave it in as it didn't make a whole lot of difference either way. Piper, I value your time and appreciate very much what you have given to me here. Thank you! And I have been enjoying your work very much! I love the image with the "rain" on the flowers. I think it will do very well! #9613
