#01-Breaking Point Test

Uploaded: October 14, 2006 12:22:14

Description

Two photos in one picture. The left side is the best shot, the right one on the "breaking point". I have used ISO200 and a 50mm lens (75mm on the D70). Both have been enlarged up to 100% magnification. LEFT:1/125s f/1.8 RIGHT:1/40s f/2.8. I made a series of 5 exposures per setup, each setup separated by 1/3 stops. 1/125 and 1/80 have been all sharp. At 1/40 most of the shots started to became fuzzy. However, I got acceptable sharp pictures as low as 1/15 seconds. Conclusion: Normally use a speed equal to the focal length or above. In low light situations for fair results keep the shutter speed above half of the focal length plus 1/3 of a stop - or use some additional support. For fast street grabs perhaps a speed of 2 x focal distance should be OK. All in all, the camera speed tests has been very useful! It would be interesting to evaluate additional shutting conditions - like the speed needed for grabs from the hip while walking, and so on...
