I manipulated this photo extensively with layers. I combined two photos, a ho-hum flower and a shot of an old paperback book cover. I used the book cover as the background with a duplicate layer set to "burn", and layered the flower shot on top with a layer property of difference. I then duped the flower layer, and changed the layer type to burn. I once again duped the flower shot and set the layer type to multiply. All layers' opacity settings were adjusted to get the end result. I then merged all the flower layers, and did a high pass sharpen. There you have it! I think you definitely created something far more interesting than either original image! Very cool effects, which give it a puzzling look I can't quite identify. I like how the fowerhead pops more than any other part of the image; the stem and leaves particularly seem very flat by comparison, but it just adds to the interest. #3071961

Really lovely - I picked up the lines in the background on the small image, which is what made me take a look and then discovered you'd gone all 'techno' LOL - really neat. What is high pass sharpen exactly - is it just CS2? #3130895

No, Robyn, not just CS2. Go to Filters in PSE 4 and go to the last filter category, which I think is "other" and High Pass is in there. I don't even use the unsharp mask anymore, because this is so much better. And thanks for the compliment! #3133918

Sorry! You have to duplicate the layer/layers you want to sharpen. Once that's done, do the high pass sharpen on that layer, then set the layer's type to either "Overlay", "Hard Light", or "Soft Light". You can also try the other "Light " layers in there. These are the best. This should get you the same color as you started with, just sharpened a bit. #3134730
