Vapor Trails

Uploaded: April 12, 2006

Description

US bombers and fighters at high altitude on a WWII raid in the Pacific, 1944. I inherited over 70 original US Air Force photographs from my uncle, who was a fighter pilot. I thought I should share some of them. They are remarkably powerful.

I'm glad you found this, Dave. I'm afraid few people get to the back pages of my gallery. That's a pity because this photographer, given his equipment and circumstances, is brilliant.

Thank you, Melissa. I missed your comment earlier.

Steve, your absolutely right. This photo is amazing. I have never seen anything like it. All the vapor trails is what caught my eye. What kindof equipment was your uncle using to photograph this? #4138300

I don't know, Dave. My uncle was a pilot, not the photographer. I inherited the shots from him, but there is nothing specifying the equipment used. There are also some remarkable straffing shots among the seventy I have.

WOW!! I am glad you moved this up! I have browsed around near the back but still missed this one! Candice will love this as she too has many like this from her father! Incredible Steve! I am going to page 9 now! :) #4647323

Thank a lot, Dianna and Mitch. I just brought these back into my gallery for the day. They were at the back, unviewed, for a long time. #4648710

I'm certainly glad I went on a little fishing expedition into your earlier gallery uploads Steve or I might have completely overlooked this dramatic aerial shot. I would like to talk with you more sometime about the rest of those 70 images.....

In my previous airline career I worked for the "civilian version" of the famed Flying Tigers of WWII. Started in 1946 by ex fighter pilot Bob Prescott and a number of his pilot buddies, I joined the Flying Tiger Line in 1953 and stayed on for another 30 years.

The photographs and personal stories of their war time exploits filled many cold and lonely nights while "working the line" back then.

Of particular interest also, the BP Editors found this image striking enough to make it one of their "picks" which may just prompt me to go back into my "ancient" archives to see if I had saved anything from those old days, fix 'em up a little and stick them on here. #5364581

I'm pleased you went fishing, AJ. Some of the images I inherited are truly outstanding. Given their equipment and the conditions, the photographers were remarkable. I'll select a few and send them to you.
