Is that Oh! or Oooohhhhh!?I can't believe your photo beat out my contest submission! What IS this contest coming too?
Seriously, congrats on the finalist, it's a fun photo-one that makes one wonder.....
Nice job on the exposure and interesting lighting. Based on the catchlights it would seem you had several sources with the strongest coming from behind and to the left (of the model)perhaps another or a good reflector camera left? Do tell. #413781

Laurie, thanks for sharing your contest submission--I enjoyed viewing it before on PN. As for technique, I have none as a portraitist. I slap on my 50mm 1.8 which turns into a nice 75mm on my 20D, and start clicking at f5.6. For this one I was on my knees on the hard Italian tiled floor of my kitchen, white wall behind me, and sun coming in from the side. There's also some windows from behind and to the side of the camera, which probably accounts for all the light sources. I'm just not a studio guy. TThere are few spots that are a bit hot, and if I had an assistant, I'm sure we could have diffused the light a little better.What really makes a photo like this is the model. He is just so damn good looking in his own peculiar way (magnetic almost!) and he's capable of such a wide range of facial expressions. If you lived closer, I might even rent him to you by the hour! #2565135

Bob, thanks for the shooting data. Natural light is always best. I think the hot areas are ok here since this image, in some ways borders on high key. Your model is indeed expressive though I don't pay my models by the hour.
