Ground Beetle

Description

Many ground beetles overwinter as adults, waking in the spring to mate, lay eggs, lie on their backs, and die. I didn't notice the pincers (not sure if that's what they are called) until I looked through the macro lens. I saw that the pincers retreated into the body, and then out again, at regular intervals. I checked on it a little later, and the in-and-out motion had really slowed down, and then it eventually stopped. It was quite fascinating to watch.

Amazing information Paddy; their story is much like that of the salmon who lay their eggs and die. Great photography, too, with excellent detail and clarity! #11699862
