Description

The 6th anniversary of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked the East Coast is 8/23/17. In the extensive damage suffered at the cathedral was the SW Grand Pinnacle; a 40-feet-tall, slender, tapering pinnacle of some 25 tons of stone, 130 feet above the ground. (Picture a very narrow gazebo-like structure, 12 stories off the ground, with an 8-sided stone steeple rising from it.) Eight amazing portrait heads barely survived; the structure was badly fractured just below the heads. The pinnacle, held up since the quake with house-jacks and scaffolding, finally had to come down, meaning breaking apart all the undamaged, mortared-together perfect stones. Weathered 60+ years, the portraits are now at street level (behind a chain link fence I shot through) letting visitors see the incredible detail and masterful carving adorning the building, even when it is normally high up out of sight.

Mother Nature! I think he's angry over the quake... Rumor 'round the cathedral is he was smiling, 60 years ago... #11630707

Thanks so much, Joanna & Harvey! I first photographed this one about five years ago, when I had the chance to go up on the scaffolding around the damaged pinnacle. Having them at ground level now makes it easier, although you have to photograph through a chain-link fence with a big zoom to blur out the fence wires. #11630812
