Description

The Statue of Dante in Piazza di Santa Croce is an outdoor monument and statue located in Piazza Santa Croce in Florence, region of Tuscany, Italy. The statue was erected in 1865 to celebrate the 600 anniversary of the birth of the poet Dante. The statue was sculpted by Enrico Pazzi of Ravenna. The pedestal was designed by Luigi del Sarto. The creation of a statue of a famous Florentine by a sculptor from Ravenna caused some rumblings. Florence and Ravenna for years had disputed who was to hold the remains of Dante: his native city or the city of his exile. The church of Santa Croce which stands on the same piazza of this statue has an elaborate but empty tomb monument to Dante. He was, in fact, buried in Ravenna at the Church of San Pier Maggiore (later called San Francesco). I have added some digital flourishments to this original photo.
