White-lined Sphinx

Uploaded: March 30, 2017 | Entered: March 30, 2017 06:30:52

Description

There are 4 species of hummingbird moth, 2 are sphinx and 2 are clear wing. The White-lined Sphinxspecies are commonly called "hummingbird," or "hawk" moths. Most are medium to large moths, with heavy bodies; wingspread reaches 5 inches or more in some species. Most, but not all, Hummingbird Moths (Sphingid’s) feed much like hummingbirds, hovering in front of a flower and sipping nectar through the extended proboscis. The proboscis rolls up like a party noisemaker when not in use, and may not be readily evident in a resting moth.

Oh wow, Micky, what a shot!!! These "little guys" are as fast an hummingbirds, hence, their nick name, but they are much smaller, and not so often seen, at least in our area, so this is really an EXCELLENT CAPTURE!!! Wonderful detail and color. Okay, you gave me something to shoot for again! <>< #1682817

Thanks Shirley, I have missed your gracious comments. Captured this little guy in the morning, flying around Daffodils it was really getting into it! Was surprised they went for Daffodils. This is the first of this species I have seen. Last year I posted Clear wing. #11576728

Amazing moth capture, Micky... love it! One of my sons used to collect these. I sometimes see a variety of these on a butterfly bush in my garden. Great capture! #11576930
