Jefferson's Legacy

Description

Thomas Jefferson said he could not live without books. After the British burned Washington (including the then-3,000 volume Library of Congress housed in the Capitol) Jefferson sold his personal library (6,500 volumes; then the largest, finest library in the country) to the government, to "restart" the Library of Congress, adding a substantial breadth of topics beyond the destroyed collection. His bust now adorns the Great Hall of the Jefferson Building of the present-day Library, the largest library (number of holdings) on Earth.
