I love this, too, Nikki! B&W is perfect here, and her look of intense concentration is spot on for a quilter! Maybe in the days of hand-sewn quilts there was more frivolity in the work; I've made quilts on a machine and it is a much more serious business! #11543075

I tried machine quilting once. It was a disaster. Let me count the ways. But, yes, the bw is just right for the portrait, as is the side lighting. #11543077

Nikki, this is just wonderful. My mom is a serious quilter... hand and machine stitched, and this could very well be her. In fact, I should get a portrait of her at her machine sometime. Anyway, a very beautiful portrait. Favorite! #11543243

I am so glad I entered this. Mary is a neighbor and agreed to a few portraits for a challenge theme on another site. We did some outside with her dog and then inside in her sewing room. She has a lot of equipment and has made an amazing number of quilts. They are gorgeous beyond belief. The one she's working on here will be for her own master bedroom bed. It has large machine embroidered flowers (seen here) as well as sections that are pieced. The colors are subdued - picture the old-fashioned dusty rose and grayed blue and cream look. So very pretty. Anyway, I am very grateful to her for allowing me to come in and capture her at work on a hobby that has obviously become a pastime. Melinda remarked on the difference between machine and hand quilting. May I add that Mary is a member of a quilting group that meets regularly in one another's homes where they not only work on their own projects in the company of like-minded friends, but also collaborate on group quilts. #11543251
