wingmen

Description

This is the most bizarre creature I have ever seen! I'm not sure of it's name but it was huge (for a moth, between 4 and 5 inches across I'd say. I'm betting it doesn't have too many predators with it's wingmen guarding it! It just stayed on this branch for quite awhile letting us all photograph it. So cool!

Thanks Jane! I took this at the Butterfly Museum at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. They have a wonderful live exhibit there. If you're ever in the area it is well worth a visit. #11474700

I believe this an Atlas moth, Linda! I had the privilege of photographing one very similar to this at the Butterfly Wonderland in Phoenix. The attendant there told me that it was quite a treat for me as it is one of the only species at their facility that they don't know exactly when it will hatch and then when it does, it only lives for a few days, as adults do not have a mouth. Very cool, huh! Wonderful capture, Linda! #11477091
