Description

The name Wilpena comes from the local aboriginal, meaning “Place of bent fingers- or cupped hand”.
The formation was possibly first seen in 1839 by the explorer Edward Eyre. Many attempts were tried to farm the district, but all failed due to lack of rain and hot summers.
I captured this scene on Fuji Film back in the 1980’s, and the mountains on the horizon are the north western corner of the pound. The trees in the foreground are River Red Gums (“Wida”in the local dialect). This scene is a perfect example of outback Australia.

A rustic atmosphere and shot, John. We in America hear about the "outback", and this is an educational example with such a sense of depth to the view. #11394974

Beautiful comp, colors, depth and framing. Enjoyed the information...sounds a lot like our desert. Nothing would grow here if it were not irrigated. #11395469

John Connolly November 06, 2015

Thanks Marilyn! There is not enough water in the district to irrigate with, barely enough to drink! #11395869
