The Gate

Description

1/500th @ F7.1, ISO 200, Nikon D70, 18-70mm @ 70 mm.
This is a crop of the original photo wherein my intent was to capture this small child running to have her picture taken under the arch with her parents close behind running with their cameras ready. I was hoping to capture the motion and anticipation of the event. However, after reviewing the original photo, I was unhappy with a multitude of distractions in the background, so I decided to manipulate the image and create something new.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, Mike! Really like the effects. Crop, clarity & composition are perfect. What effect did you use for the blur? #2108640

Thanks everyone for your comments. I had a lot of fun doing this, but you're right, it takes a lot of time.

Pat, I'll be honest with you, I can't remember all that I did with this picture. It was a while ago and I didn't record a complete list of steps. I'll have to be more diligent now that I've joined Better Photo so I can answer peoples questions accurately. I work in Paint Shop Pro as an editor and if by the blur effect you mean the wavy effects on the side of the gate, that was done with the "Wave" distortion effect and the lights were done with the
"Lights" and "Sunburst" effect. Additionally, it was cloned, smudged, sharpened and then smoothed as a final step to soften everything down and balance it. That's the best I can tell from looking at it. Might have been some other stuff, because you know how it goes when you start experimenting with things ... :-) #2108824

Wonderful concept and execution, Mike -- reminds me of Jerry Uelsmann. The contrast between the light and haunting moods is superb! #2356127

This is outstanding Mike. I love playing with images... you never know where its going to go. Often where you never imagined. With an end result like this you ought to be trying things like this a lot more. #6742099
