How It Looked

Description

...long ago.
Photo taken in 2007.
California is currently in its fourth year of drought conditions. According to news reports, our State Governor is preparing a bill to ration water in various ways, effective July 1st. People still over-water their lawns, leave faucet water running while they brush their teeth or shave, etc. All this, despite repeated warnings last year and this year about the need to cut back voluntarily.
A few nights ago, we briefly saw and heard rain outside, something that hasn't happened in weeks. But it's too little, too late.

I will be back later tonight to comment on photos. Thank you for looking.

Living through a drought is not a pleasant experience Mary! I live on the driest continent on earth, so I know first hand about the lack of rain and its effect on the country! When I retired there was a 10 year drought with sever water restrictions, we were not even allowed to wash our car with a hose!
This is a beautiful close up with wonderful verdant color and great detail! Nice work! #1614237

Excellent capture Mary!! #11283653

Beautiful details and capture. So sad about the drought. #11283705

We can relate to your drought conditions, Mary! At the moment our restrictions are not really too much of an inconvenience as we have had a lot of rain recently. Wish we could send some your way. John was almost right with our dry continent, but the driest is in fact Antarctica. Oz is the second driest!! A mute point for you when you are in such need!! Love the green capture! #11283722

What a beautiful close up of this water laden leaf Mary - gorgeous light, colour and detail! So sad about the drought - hope you get some decent rain in the near future. #11283747

Wonderful shot, Mary! #11283852

Thank you for your comments and your sympathy, John, Jeff, Tammy, Phil, Nadia, and Barbara. I guess our drought is preferable to winter blizzards on the East Coast, or thunderstorms and tornadoes in Illinois or Iowa. It's all relative, isn't it? #11283904

This plant appears to be savoring each drop of the life-giving moisture, doing its part in conserving this precious commodity. Everyone should likewise do their part as we would all suffer if the drought continues in California. It would help perhaps to let the lawns go brown! I say "Green is Beautiful but Brown is Cute." ---Rey #11283908

Mary K. Robison April 12, 2015

We can do you one better, Rey. As you said, green is beautiful, so why not put green (and purple, and pink, etc.) succulents where lawn used to be? We're all for eliminating the Tyranny of the Lawn - no more mowing, no more long watering sessions!! For once, Government 's getting it right! ;) #11283916

Love the greens, close up & the beautiful droplets, Mary. Been following the news about the drought- sad and kind of scary. #11284158

It's such a serious topic. This image could be on the front page of the Los Angeles Times! (And should be). It's unreal the rivers and lakes and reservoirs and all it of. Almost dried up. Even our glaciers way up here in the land of abundance are receding and they say in 100 years they might be GONE! What is going on?! Is this the nature evolution of things or are we looking at this continent and hemisphere becoming a desert? (The DINOSAURS would NOT approve!) It's a strong image representing life, Mare. Thanks for posting this and the reminder we all need. CONSERVE! It takes villages to save nations.

Here it's the other way around. It rains a lot, Summer and Winter. But in the latest years is HAS become warmer and dryer in the Summer time in Denmark too. Some people have actually started to grow grapes for wine. That's something new.
But I'm glad you cought these beautiful leaves, Mary.
And the drops are fantastic!! So is your perspective. It's like walking into a rain forest and get my face all wet :) Quite a sensational feeling to get from an image. #11286609

Mary K. Robison April 16, 2015

Kiki, I'm sorry to hear that Denmark has been affected by the climate change, too. Scientists can argue till the cows come home, but they can't change facts, i.e., the snowpack level in California is at its lowest ever, since record-keeping began in 1950. And that means VERY little water is, or will be, in our state reservoirs.this summer...
An update on mandatory water conservation since I posted this: Each city and water district is expected to enforce a percentage of water cutback in the next few weeks. People who are recorded wasting water will face fines and/or jail time. I believe that pretty much sums it up. Big Brother is watching you, me, and everyone else. :-(
To end on a positive note: Thanks so much for all your kind words about the photo, My fingers are still crossed that your Finalist fox's eyes hypnotize the judges into giving him gold. #11286945

Teresa Burnett level-classic April 25, 2015

Gorgeous color and detail here, Mary!! Glad to hear you did get a bit of rain, even though not nearly enough! I've heard they are going to start getting really serious about folks who are wasting water! Sounds like they should have done that a long time ago!! #11292406

Mary K. Robison April 27, 2015

Hi, Teresa ~ thanks for your kind comments. As for the drought, yes, people should have had the sense to cut down water usage on their own a very long time ago, but...that's human nature, I suppose. :-( #11293003
