The Rock!

Description

We noticed a strange phenomenon during our stay in Armidale, many property owners would place a rock on one of their gate posts, and on rare occasions even a normal fence post would be adorned likewise. I am curious as to the origin of this habit, so if anyone can enlighten me it would be appreciated.

John, I'll bet the rock is there to prop the gate open if you're driving thru. When you close the gate, you put the rock back on the post for next use! #11271544

I have no idea, John.
But this sure is an enchanting image. I have to wonder: What's behind the gate - what's in the fog - and the stories go wild in my mind. :) :) #11271822

John,
Yes, the reason for the rock is exactly what Katherine said, to prop open the gate so a lone driver can drive through. I'm a country girl and this is what we have been doing for years. I remember my great grandfather and great uncle doing it when I was little and they were building a cattle gap. Although where you captured this beautiful photograph, looks like no one has passed through this gate in quite a while! LOVE the fog and the way the gate breaks up the horizon line! Congratulations! #11318412
