Description

Sun Notch is one of the many coves along the base of Crater Lake in Oregon. I'm not a scientist and don't understand why the lake is as blue as it is. Being the volcano Mount Mazama that erupted 7,700 years ago is the reason Crater Lake formed. Water from melting snow, rain and springs began to accumulate in the massive, bowl-shaped caldera of Crater Lake. At 1,943 feet, the lake is the deepest in the United States. In the deepest parts of the lake the water is pristine blue, along the edges the water appears greenish blue...almost tropical.
