Seems like LOTUS?

Uploaded: August 04, 2014 | Entered: August 04, 2014 02:49:21

Description

----
The original pond at Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve (in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania) was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. A beautiful new pond was designed and created in a different location in the park. In its second year of existence, the pond and its water- and perimeter plants is flourishing almost beyond imagination.
----
From its flower, leaf, and seed pod, this specimen has all the ear marks of a lotus. But it is growing on the pond's EDGE and is not submerged in water.
-----
Could this BE a lotus?
-----
The photo was made on July 8.

Looks like a lotus. I suppose you'll need to update all with a photo later on. Nice story too, Michelle! #11100910

Michelle, I am sure it is a lotus, as long a they have some of their roots dipping into the water, they will survive - I've seen that before, as the water starts to decline. Beautiful capture!!
(And in answer to your dilemma in London, yes, I know just how disappointing that feels - ugh!!) #11100920

Beautiful flower, Michelle. Great capture.
It could be Yellow Lotus (Nelumbo Lutea) also known as American Lotus. It is native to North America and (as Debbie said) can grow on the edge of the pond.
Not to be confused with Indian Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera) or just plain "Lotus". So it is a Lotus but not the Lotus. #11100952

Believe Bojan is correct - it's an American lotus. I've seen them growing wild along the Mississippi mudflats - quite a sight. In any event, as long as its roots are anchored in mud, it'll grow and spread via rhizomes. It's a "two day" flower - opening one day, closing at night, opening the second day when at some point, the petals fall off. You capture of this pretty delicately colored lotus is lovely against the old stonework, Michelle...hope you get to see one fully opened! #11101601

Love seeing it tall like that, as though stretching for the view. I'd never heard of this sort of lotus, but will keep my eye out for it now. #11101609
