As promised earlier. The tall gold spire of the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral topped with a gold angel holding a cross is considered on of the focal points and icons of St. Petersburg. At one time it was the tallest structure in all of Russia. During the WWII siege, mountain climbers scaled the spire and camouflaged it to protect if from the German bombing raids.

The first stone of the foundation of the Peter and Paul fortress was laid by Peter the Great himself on May 16th 1703. It was completed in 1725 but soon after lost its military significance and was a political prison until 1922 when the fortress was opened as a museum. #1575788Ellen Hodges June 09, 2014
