Genius of Tile

Description

A marvelous, tight diameter, self-supporting spiral stairway rising more than 10 stories and created entirely out of Guastavino tile, without a central support column. Typically, access spirals like this, inside a cathedral's walls and turrets, would be stacked stone steps, resulting in a "column" running right up the middle. This view is up the central void resulting from Guastavino's ingenious design. Guastavino tile installations are most often domes and vaults, but sometimes complex stairways were done. (Engineers at MIT today are still trying to unravel the secrets of Guastavino's proprietary systems; the company dissolved in the early 1960's.) When the tile is not plastered over, the installations feature a distinctive herringbone pattern, often with ribbed, unglazed tiles and protruding mortar seams. This stairway, from the early 1900's, is tucked away in the cavernous Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York City.

So wonderful. I just adore the textures in the tiles and then the patterns and of course the overall spiral. Winner. #11018213

Thank you very much, folks! The stairway construction, like many of Guastavino's tile projects, is remarkably impressive. #11018964
