That water is such a pretty color. Seems like there's a lot of that in Canada. Wonder what makes it that color. Anybody know? Sure isn't the sky reflecting in it, at least not this one. #1561317

Hi everyone. The lakes in the Canadian Rockies have the greenish to turquoise color because they are fed by nearby glaciers that contain ground up clay and quartz-like materials.

This "rock flour" floats near the waters surface and absorbs or eliminates much of the blue light, but reflects some blue and greens. And that's the light we see.

There are glacial lakes all over the world, but the Canadian glacier lakes have a little extra luminosity because much of the "rock flour" is made of limestone, which enhances the refraction.

So, there you have it. :-) #10958530

Beautiful shot. It has been a few years since up that way, but miss the blue green waters of Banff, Jasper and other lakes in BC. #10958864
