CITIBIKES

Uploaded: October 27, 2013

Description

----
It had been a year since I spent any time in New York City. But the first thing that caught my eye on Thursday morning, walking out of Penn Station was this huge bank of blue bicycles.
------
They are CitiBikes! You slide your credit card into a slot in a nearby kiosk, and one of the banked bikes is unlocked. Your card is charged $4 if you return it to any other bank of CitiBikes anywhere in the city in 30 minutes. If you're late, there's a charge. If you're early, you get a credit.
-----
On the one-mile walk to the Javits Convention Center, we encountered MANY such bike banks.
------
Good Idea?

The first time I saw this was in Montreal a few years ago - they were called Bixi Bikes, I think. Now I've seen them in other cities, including Chicago. I love the idea, and I absolutely love your image! Well done, Michelle. #10882298

I'll tell you, you're super work with the framing here just grabs the eye, even in the thumb. What a great idea this is. In this area, by the harbor, they have free bikes to borrow. Nothing like this many all round though. Lucky you getting to go to New York. BTW, I didn't run (or walk) the 5k. #10882315

Excellent perspective - the row of blues and design elements seem to go on forever...and yep, I think this is a great idea - Austin sure has it's share of bike rentals and bicyclists on the road - this is Lance Armstrong country, after all. #10882368
