A great place to visit Lisa and a very nice composition with that lone tree.

Shooting almost into the sun, as you did, caused a few problems. The image is a bit soft and the WB could use some tweaking. Would have been nice if you'd used some fill light for the tree.

Even so, a very nice image shot in not so ideal lighting conditions. #1543093

It is a well-composed picture, Lisa. I agree with Dale's comments. I'll look forward to seeing his suggestions. While that looks to like it was taken from Glacier Point, I can't quite place just where this is. #10832337

I like the composition, but as noted the lighting caused some problems. In addition to Dale's suggestions I might try some selective blue and/or cyan channel reduction on half dome and beyond below the sky. #10832931

I love the composition on this! Perfect how the tree does not collide with the rocks. The sky really sets it apart. I don't mind the lighting issues mentioned, but I am sure the suggestions would improve it! #10833169

I like the comp on this. Lisa, but I wonder if it's possible to bring up the details a bit on the flat face of the rock.

I agree that the WB needs a bit of tweaking as well. #10833224

Hi everyone, thanks for the comments.
I'm glad the composition worked out; this tree was really fantastic in person.
I've tried an edit; tweaking the white balance and a new crop; what do you think? #10833545

Dale Hardin September 04, 2013

I like your edit and hadn't expected the crop but it works out just fine. The WB helped and you are almost there.

To take it to the new level, would suggest that when you change the WB, mask the sky. On the resulting image (your edited one) apply some high pass filtering to take away that dull edge, and reduce the highlights just a tad.

You sure have a knack for getting at the right spot for the right image. Excellent eye. #10833565

the change in the face of Half Dome, and detail in the tree(s) is a big improvement. #10833566

Yup, the edit is a nice improvement! #10833600

At last an image of somewhere that I have actually been to albeit about 25-30 years ago. Thanks for sharing, Lisa. #10833894

I agree, a nice improvement. Some like the blue toning which is why I don’t necessarily think that removing it is an improvement. Here is an example of what that looks like. In this edit I removed almost all the blue and cyan, but you can remove none to all as per your taste. I would leave a little more than I did on this edit which is for illustration purposes only. #10834258

I am going with Debra on this one. the composition is very nice. the placement of the tree is in a good location. I don't mind the lighting issues mentioned. I really like the blue tones. well done!!! #10834600

I am so late but really like your composition and the edit looks good! The lone tree really helps make this picture stand out!! #10839095
