Our Side

Description

The western span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, shot from the Embarcadero last month. This weekend it stands empty and idle, closed while construction crews work to connect the new eastern span on the other side of Treasure Island. The old eastern span was discovered to be flawed when part of it collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Meanwhile, the new span, while designed to withstand a massive earthquake, exhibited problems during testing, when 32 bolts snapped. Officials insist it's still safer than the old eastern span. I think I'll stay on this side for a while!
