Gold Mine at Hatcher Pass

Uploaded: August 27, 2013

Description

A view of Independence Gold Mine at Hatcher Pass in Alaska on a foggy day. This shot shows the roof of the mine shaft entrance and rail tracks leading in, with the mining camp below. This mine produced gold before World War 2 and was shut down during the war due to gold being a nonessential item for the war effort. Today, the mine still produces gold through private claims and visitors are also welcomed to pan for gold in the creek at the visitor center.
